Bears Fall to MIT, 45-37

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.-Junior Matt Redfield recorded a double-double as MIT defeated Coast Guard, 45-37, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. MIT improves to 15-6 (6-4 NEWMAC) while Coast Guard falls to 5-16 (2-8 NEWMAC) on the year.

Redfield finished with game-highs of 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead three Engineers in double-figures.  Sophomores Justin Pedley and Ryan Frankel each finished the game with 10 points for MIT with Frankel adding a team-high four assists.

Scoring was at a premium throughout as MIT went into halftime with just a 15-14 lead as neither team could score a point in the final 6:10 of the first half.

Coast Guard finally broke the scoring drought at the 17:51 mark of the second half as freshman Jordan Lachowsky buried a three-pointer. Sophomore Ricky Rodriguez would knock down a trifecta of his own on the next possession to give the Bears a 20-15 lead with 16:53 to play.

Freshman Tim Butala got MIT on the right track by hitting a jumper to cut the deficit to 20-17 with 16:26 to play, ending a stretch of 11:09 spanning both halves, without a point for MIT. Including that point, MIT would go on a 19-6 spurt over the next 16:12 to take a commanding 34-26 lead with just 3:14 to play.

Sophomore Kevin Alvarez led Coast Guard with 10 points, his fourth consecutive game scoring at least 10 points.

Senior Devonte Weems scored three points while leading the Bears with eight rebounds and four assists.

Coast Guard limited MIT junior Andrew Acker to just seven points and four rebounds in 19 minutes of action after finding himself in foul trouble for most of the game. The 37 points scored by Coast Guard were their fewest since a 68-33 loss to Conn. College in December of 2012.

Before the game, Coast Guard's three seniors – Weems, John Benedict, and Kevin Sowers – were honored for their contributions to the program over the past four years..

Coast Guard returns to action on Wednesday, February 12th when they host Emerson at 5:30 pm.
