NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The United States Coast Guard Academy women's rowing team wrapped up their regular season schedule over the weekend on their home waters of the Thames River by taking on New Engladn Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Mount Holyoke College. With a strong tail current powering them through, Coast Guard came away with multiple wins on the day.
In the first match-up of the morning, the the Bears' 1V crew took the lead off the line to open a dominating performance. Mount Holyoke held their position into the 1,000-meter mark, but were unable to respond to a big move from Coast Guard. The hosts crossed the line with a time of 6:59.9, finishing over 14 seconds ahead of the Lyons.
For the second race of the day, Coast Guard's 2V and 3V boats matched up against Mount Holyoke's 2V. From the start, Coast Guard's 2V took off while the 3V battled alongside MHC. Coming into the second 500 meters of the race, both Bears crews were able to pull away from Mount Holyoke and holding their positions through the finish line. Coast Guard's 2V crossed the line in a time of 7:21.9, followed closely by Coast Guard's 3V with a time of 7:23.0. Mount Holyoke finished the race with a time of 7:53.1.
Wrapping up the morning's racing was the novice 4V event. Coast Guard's crew was comprised of entirely of rowers and a coxswain that are new to the sport this season. Taking on their first race, Coast Guard struggled to find their footing in the first 500 meters but eventually settled into a good rhythm and held their margin on Mount Holyoke into the second half of the race. However, the Mount Holyoke crew proved to be a strong competitor and went on to win the race by a margin of 19.3 seconds.
Full results from the day can be viewed here, while all four Coast Guard lineups can be viewed below. Both teams will head to Worcester, Massachusetts, this upcoming Saturday for the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Lake Quinsigamond.
