NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's swimming & diving team fell to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 75-223, in the Bears' first meet at home this season. The reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and NCAA Champions won all but one race during the day.
Coast Guard drops to 8-3, while MIT improves to 3-2. The Engineers will be in action again next Saturday, January 17th, and Division I opponent Boston University (4-3).
MIT came into the contest ranked #5 in the most recent College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Dual Meet Poll, released on
December 19th.
The lone winner on the day for Coast Guard was
Sam Halvorson (Chesapeake, Va.), who paced the 100 Back with a time of 59.05. Halvorson was also runner-up in the stroke's 200-yard variant, putting forth a time of 2:09.05.
Madelyn Paxton (Mechanicsburg, Va.) earned a top-3 finish in three races, finishing as the runner-up in the 100 Back (1:00.83) and 100 Fly (59.70) and swimming to third place in the 200 IM (2:14.24). Also scoring multiple top-3 placements were
Julia Thomas (Chandler, Ariz.) in the 50 Free (3rd, 24.96) and 100 Free (2nd, 55.54) and
Zoe Suhajda (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 100 Free (3rd, 11:18.13) and 500 Free (3rd, 5:29.35).
Rebecca Hurst (Guilderland, N.J.) was third in the100 Breast with a time of 1:10.52, while
Kathleen O'Shea (Decatur, Ga.) followed up Thomas in the 100 Free with a third-place finish of 55.68.
Finally, in relay action, the 400 Medley Relay crew of Halvorson, Hurst, Paxton, and Thomas were runners-up with a time of 4:02.50. Thomas and Halvorson rounded out the day in the 200 Free Relay alongside
Eleanor Murphy (McLean, Va.) and O'Shea, and the crew placed third at 55.68.

Bears women's swimming & diving will return to action in a week's time for their biggest meet of the season, in which they'll head to Kings Point to take on their archrivals from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at noon. Last year's meeting at Roland between the rival service academies saw a dominant 208.5-81.5 Senior Day victory for CGA.
