Cranston, R.I. - Coast Guard sailing took on the 2025 ICSA Open Team Race National Championship, finishing 13th overall in a fiercely competitive field featuring top 16 collegiate sailing teams in the country.
Harvard University took first place, while Yale University and Roger Williams University rounded out the podium. Hosted by Brown University at Edgewood Yacht Club, the regatta showcased high-caliber racing and the depth of talent in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA).
Representing the Bears were seniors
Coleman Schofield (Yorktown, Va.),
Nicholas Reeser (Wilton Manors, Fla.),
Jack Derry (East Lyme, Conn.), and
Dan Neville (Plantation, Fla.); along with juniors
Bradley Whiteway (Potomac, Md.),
Charlie Pohl (Euclid, Ohio),
Sarah Krajewski (Lewes, Del.), and
Gavin VanManen (Rockford, Mich.). The team notched several key wins during the round-robin stage but ultimately came up short in advancing to the top eight, concluding their championship run in the first round.
Uncooperative conditions greeted sailors on Thursday and Friday mornings, with minimal wind early in the day. Fortunately, consistent afternoon sea breezes allowed the race committee to complete the full format of the regatta, including the round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals.
Being selected for the National Championship itself marks a significant achievement for the program, particularly in the ultra-competitive NEISA conference. Notably, six of the top eight finishers at the event were NEISA teams with nine of the sixteen overall hailing from the conference, underscoring the strength of the region and the level of competition the Bears face throughout their season.
Looking ahead to next season, the team is poised for continued success with key returning juniors set to lead a developing core of young talent. Their experience and leadership will be instrumental in carrying forward the team's momentum and institutional knowledge in team racing.
Bears sailing will be entering their Fleet Race Nationals training block with the intent of performing well again on the national stage at the end of May.
