Bears perform strongly at conference championships

Coast Guard sailing delivered multiple impressive showings this past weekend as they competed in three major regattas: the NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship; the NEISA Open Fleet Race Championship for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl; and the George Morris Trophy.

BOSTON, Mass.  -  George Morris Trophy (hosted by Boston University)
The Bears took the win at the Morris Trophy by topping a field of 13 schools. The victory was led by a standout freshman skipper lineup of Benjamin Reeser (Wilton Manors, Fla.) and Tomas Riccio (Rochester, N.Y.) with fellow first-year Sam Puleio (Tinton Falls, N.J.) and sophomore Gavin VanManen (Rockford, Mich.). With a steady westerly breeze of 8 to 12 knots on Saturday, the team sailed a total of eight races. Sunday racing was canceled due to heavy conditions.

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  -  NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship (hosted by Yale)
This year's conference championship was held in challenging conditions with only three races completed due to overpowering wind on Sunday, which reached over 30 knots. The Bears fought hard to secure sixth place in a talented fleet, represented by juniors Julia Conneely (Tampa, Fla.) and Allison Nystrom (Centerville, Mass.) and freshmen Ella Demand (Toms River, N.J.) and Gabriella Fields (Key West, Fla.).

RESULTS

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  -  NEISA Open Fleet Race Championship (hosted by Brown)
Coast Guard took eighth place in a tough, wind-heavy weekend. Saturday saw breeze between 10 to 23 knots, while Sunday ramped up to 20 to 35 knots with gusts nearing 40. A total of 14 races were sailed. Representing the Academy were seniors Nicholas Reeser (Wilton Manors, Fla.), Colman Schofield (Yorktown, Va.), and Daniel Neville (Plantation, Fla.); juniors Bradley Whiteway (Potomac, Md.), Luke Zylinski (Lavalette, N.J.), Charlie Pohl (Euclid, Ohio), and Sarah Krajewski (Lewes, Del.); and sophomore Grace Austin (Morrpark, Calif.).

RESULTS

Looking ahead, Bears sailing gears up for a big week with the Open Team Race National Championship, hosted by Brown, from April 24th through the 26th; and their last regular season regatta at the Admirals Cup Fleet Race, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, from April 26th through the 27th.
