Women's Swim & Dive Defeats Springfield and Wheaton

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's swimming & diving team picked up two dual wins at Springfield College on Saturday, defeating the Pride by a score of 201-95 and fellow visitors Wheaton College, 205-80.

Coast Guard improves to 6-0, Springfield defeated Wheaton and moves to 1-2, while the Lyons move to 1-4. Both will see their next round of action in a week's time on November 15th, with the Pride at another tri-meet as visitors alongside Wesleyan University (0-0) at Williams College (0-0), while Wheaton heads to Bates College (0-0).

The 400-yard medley relay team of Sam Halvorson (Chesapeake, Va.), Rebecca Hurst (Guilderland, N.J.), Madelyn Paxton (Mechanicsburg, Va.), and Julia Thomas (Chandler, Ariz.) started the day with a 4:06.68 win and ended with Kathleen O'Shea (Decatur, Ga.), Halvorson, Eleanor Murphy (McLean, Va.) and Thomas swimming 3:43.74 to take the 400 free relay.

Halvorson, Thomas, and Paxton were all major players in the day's individual races. Halvorson made a strong case to win back-to-back New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimmer of the Week nods with wins in the 100-yard backstroke (59.45) and 200 back (2:10.98); Thomas continued her strong freshman season with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (24.96) and 100 free (54.98); and Paxton touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (59.06) and 200-yard individual medley (2:13.45)

Four more took first place in individual events, with team captain Megan Doubrava (Aurora, Colo.) swimming 11:08.41 in the 1000 free. Hurst was an individual victor as well, clocking in at 1:11.33 for the 100-yard breaststroke. Tessa Breitbart (Roseville, Calif.) win the 200 fly in 2:18.73, and Mikayla Jolley's (Las Vegas, Nev.) time of 2:37.44 in the 200 breast was the fastest in the 200 breast field.

Finally, freshman diver Phoebe Jane Allred (Seattle, Wash.) had a solid day on the boards by placing fourth at one meter with a score of 217.27 and taking the runner-up spot on the 3-meter with a 235.06 tally.

Bears women's swim & dive will be back in the pool on Friday, November 14th, with a dual meet at Wellesley College (4-0). Coast Guard were 189-99 victors in last year's tri-meet with the Blue and Connecticut College.
