WELLESLEY, Mass. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's swimming & diving team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Wellesley College, 170-121, on Friday. The final score was the smallest margin of victory for Coast Guard so far this season.
The Bears improve to 7-0, while Wellesley suffers their first loss and moves to 4-1. The Blue will take on Mount Holyoke College (0-1) for their next one on Saturday, November 22nd.
Megan Doubrava (Aurora, Colo.) led the way for Coast Guard on the day with three individual event wins. The captain took first in the 1000 Free in 11:03; the 200 Free in 2:13; and the 500 Free in 5:24. Also winning multiple races was
Madelyn Paxton (Mechanicsburg, Va.), who took the 100 Free in 58 seconds and the 200 IM in 2:12.19, narrowly outracing
Lana Richard of the Blue's 2:12.46 in a photo finish.
Julia Thomas (Chandler, Ariz.) continued her stellar start with another 50 Free win, in which she touched the wall in 24 seconds. Thomas wasn't the only freshman winner for the Bears, as classmate
Phoebe Jane Allred (Seattle, Wash.) recorded her first victory on the 3-meter board with a score of 190.42. Allred was also runner-up in the 1-meter at 181.73, while fellow diver
Lara Baronsky(Victory, N.Y.) was third in the 1m with a 146.03 and a 112.35-point runner-up on the 3m.
Thomas was also part of the Bears' sole relay win of the day, teaming up with
Kathleen O'Shea (Decatur, Ga.),
Mikayla Jolley (Las Vegas, Nev.), and
Sam Halvorson (Chesapeake, Va.) to swim 3:42 in the 400 Free Relay.
Bears women's swim & dive will be back in the pool on Saturday, November 22nd, for a dual with Brandeis University (0-6). The Judges fell to Coast Guard earlier this season at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's quad, 241-44, and will look for revenge in one-on-one action.
