NEW LONDON, Conn. —
Cole Miller (Annapolis, Md.) of men's soccer and
Lauren Mellon (Falls Church, Va.) have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command (week ending October 5th).
Miller was integral in helping the Coast Guard men's soccer team extend their unbeaten streak by contributing to a tie at Western New England University and a win in New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action as Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The junior midfielder assisted on a first half goal at WNEU and scored the game-winner at WPI to help men's soccer improve to 6-2-3 on the season and 4-0-2 in their last six. Miller is been on pace for a breakout 2025, currently leading the team with seven points and being one of two players to score three goals this season. Both marks are one away from his respective single-season bests of eight points and four goals.
Mellon was the Bears third finisher this past Saturday at Lehigh University's Paul Short Run, clocking a personal record time of 22:20 for 57th overall in the highly-competitve field of over 400 runners. Mellon's performance itself wasn't the sole factor in her getting the honor this week, but also her journey up to this point. The senior captain entered her final season fresh off of the heels of an injury she sustained during the summer and dropped a minute off of her season-best time set two weeks prior at Wesleyan University's Cardinal Invitational with her performance at the Paul Short.
Miller and the men's soccer team play again this coming Saturday, when they'll head to Boston to play Emerson College at 1 p.m., while Mellon and the women's cross country team are off this week to further prepare ffor the Connecticut College Invitational on October 18th at Harkness Memorial State Park.
