Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. - Baseball hosted Norwich in its home opener, taking down the Cadets in both games, shutting out them out in the first with a final of 5-0, and ... to end the second.
Game one was a defensive battle through the first four and a half innings, neither team bringing in runs. Despite that, the Bears had four hits through four innings.
The bottom of the fifth is where the action began.
Wyatt Duthu led off with a single to right field. He was followed up with
Carson Cho being awarded a walk. With two on,
Nathan Stafford doubled to left center, scoring Duthu and giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the next at bat,
Parker Madden homered to bring in three runs, putting the Bears up 4-0.
CGA added on to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when
Jack Steel brought home
Luke Percifield.
With a 5-0 lead into the top of the seventh, the Bears got a three-up three-down inning to shutout the Cadets.
Stafford led in hits for both teams with two. Madden led in RBIs with his three.
Harrison Milbert recorded 11 strikeouts in his six innings, while
Ryan Karman had one is his lone inning.
Game two did not start in favor of the Bears, as they were down 2-0 in the top of the inning. However, to avoid more runs crossing the plate, CGA turned two, getting the runners at third and first to head to the home half.
Bottom of the second, Duthu led off for CGA with a single to right.
Blake George stepped up and doubled, bringing Duthu home, bringing the Bears within one. Cho then followed up with a single to give Coast Guard runners at first and third. Stafford grounded out next, but a run crossed the plate, tying the game at two.
The Bears broke it open in the bottom of the second with six runs off of five hits to give CGA the 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Coast Guard added five more after two bases loaded walks and a single by George.
Norwich got three back in the top of the fifth for make the game 13-5. Home half of the inning, Coast Guard added one to go up by nine.
The Cadets brought it back within eight before heading into the bottom half of the sixth. However, the Bears got it back in the bottom have to extend their lead back to nine.
After just a five-batter top of the seventh, the Bears clinched the 15-6 win.
Coast Guard will host Trinity on March 20th at 3:30 PM.
