Box Score Myrtle Beach, SC- Coast Guard baseball lost a back and forth game to Catholic University by a score of 8-7. The loss for CGA is their first of the season, dropping them to 4-1 overall. The Catholic Cardinals improve to 8-3 on the year.
The Bears struck first in the game, scoring in the top of the first without recording a hit. For the second time in five games,
Jack Steel led off the game with a hit by pitch. He then stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch. Catholic went down quietly in the 1st but struck for four runs in the 2nd. The Cardinals could have buried CGA when
Charles Red inherited two runners with just one out in the 2nd but the senior from Panama City, Florida shut the door.
In the 3rd, Coast Guard chipped away at the lead on a two out RBI single by
Wyatt Duthu to score
Kael Godshalk, who reached base on a hit by pitch. They went down with little drama for the next three innings but threatened again in the top of the 7th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs,
Luke Percifield scorched a ball right at the perfectly positioned Catholic center fielder who caught the line drive to end the rally.
Despite not scoring in the middle innings, Coast Guard stayed in the game thanks to stellar pitching by
Ryan Karman. The freshman from Sayville, New York made the most of his first collegiate outing with 2.2 innings pitched of no hit ball.
In the 8th, the Bears bats finally broke through.
Jack Steel led off with a double, followed by a
Wyatt Duthu walk and stolen base. Freshman
Nathan Stafford drove them both in with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4. Two batters later,
Parker Madden gave them the lead. With two outs and two strikes, Madden put a ball over the right field fence to give CGA a 6-5 lead.
Coast Guard would give the lead back for good in the bottom of the 8th on a two out, three run, no doubt home run by Catholic DH Joe Marini. The Bears would rally again in the 9th, scoring one run on a
Carson Cho single and getting the tying run on but they were unable to drive him in.
Coast Guard will play their final game on their Myrtle Beach spring trip tomorrow, March 14th vs Lesley at 3:00 PM.
