Sailing Performs Strongly at Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta and Match Race Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  The Bears raced in five different events around the east coast this past weekend. Thirty-eight cadets competed, with the offshore team racing two boats at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta in New York and the dinghy team racing at the Atlantic Coast Tournament in Maryland; the Nevins Trophy in New York; the Captain Hurst Bowl in New Hampshire; and the New England Match Race Championship at home.

  • LARCHMONT, N.Y.  -  Hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club and Storm Trysail, the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta brought 41 collegiate teams and 313 sailors from around the country to New York to face off against one another in one of the largest collegiate offshore regattas in the world. The offshore team thrived in heavy winds over the course of the weekend to bring home another 1st place win in Stormy Petrel, beating out seven other boats to earn the top spot. Sailing on Stormy Petrel were seniors Parker O' SullivanSean SullivanWilliam CoryHailey JohnsEthan Brown, and Alex Rogers; juniors Charlotte Waring and Hudson Holden; and first-year Sarah Evans. Sailing on Cool Breeze, the team earned 2nd place in their class and was sailed by seniors Kobi Weiland and Sam Humphreys; juniors Connor BoudreauAlexis TaylorEve LanzafameJosh Golden, and Will Spada; and juniors Ned Jobson, Keith Teague, and Ben De Ondarza.
  • NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  Coast Guard sailing hosted eight other teams on the Thames River to compete for the New England Match Race Championship. Match racing is a specialty discipline in sailing with head-to-head racing between teams. The racing requires aggressive tactics and boat handling vs. the opposing team, which can make for some intense racing. On top of this format of racing, the Bears battled gusty and shifty winds up to 25 knots. Representing the Bears for this event were seniors Colman Schofield, Jack Derry, and Laura Slovensky and junior Charlie Pohl. The Bears were strong throughout the weekend and were able to earn a 4th place finish, leaving them with a good chance of qualifying for the Match Race National Championship that will be held in November in New York.
  • ST. MARY'S COUNTY, Md.  -  St. Mary's College of Maryland hosted this year's Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament with 16 women's sailing teams from up and down the east coast battling on the tricky St. Mary's River. Representing the bears were seniors Celia Houston and Charlotte McCarthy; juniors Julia Conneely and Allison Nystrom; and first-year Ella Demand. The Bears sailed excellently and improved throughout the weekend landing in a strong 5th place overall.
  • HANOVER, N.H.  -  The Captain Hurst Bowl is an annual event hosted by Dartmouth College out of their beautiful home-waters, Lake Mascoma. Due to the mountains over-looking the lake, wind conditions can be extremely gusty, and the Bears had to manage 7-25 knots of wind throughout the weekend. Representing the Bears were juniors Luke Zylinski and Bradley Whiteway and sophomores Gavin VanManen and Grace Austin, who were able to finish in a strong 10th place in a difficult fleet.
  • KINGS POINT, N.Y.  -  The Nevins Trophy, hosted by Merchant Marine, was the final event the Bears raced at this past weekend. Sailors saw the same gusty and windy conditions throughout the weekend. This regatta saw a total of 14 races and the first-year squad was able to gain valuable experience at a high level regatta, earning a 15th place finish. The sailors at this regatta included sophomore Julian Henderson and first-years David VinogradovJoey RichardsonBenjamin ReeserTomas Riccio, and Sam Puleio.
