Sailing Finishes Second at Danmark Trophy

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  This past weekend the USCGA Sailing Team competed in three events: the Danmark Trophy at CGA, the Women's ACC Round 1A at Connecticut College, and the first round of the American Yacht Club Fall Series in New York.
  • Danmark Trophy (hosted by CGA): The Danmark Trophy is the first major regatta of the fall season with 20 of the top teams from around the country competing to see where they stack up. Sailors were greeted to challenging conditions on the Thames River with 4-13 knots of shifty breeze and some rain. The conditions could not stop the Bears from securing a fantastic 2nd place out of a fleet of 20 boats. The Bears finished behind Harvard University while beating Yale University. The Sailors for the CGA Bears were Colman Schofield (Yorktown, Va.), Nicholas Reeser (Wilton Manors, Fla.), Charles Pohl (Euclid, Ohio), and Daniel Neville (Plantation, Fla.), along with many cadets helping run the races.
  • American Yacht Club Fall Series (hosted by AYC): Eighteen sailors traveled to AYC in Rye, New York to race in the first weekend of the American Yacht Club Fall Series. Winds from 20-28 knots made for an exciting event in some very challenging conditions. After racing was abandoned on Saturday, Cool Breeze sailed an excellent race on Sunday, securing a 2nd place finish in the first race of the series. Stormy Petrol also finished in a strong 3rd place. Cool Breeze was comprised of all senior sailors, including Parker O'Sullivan (Bolton, Mass.), Sean Sullivan (Apex, N.C.), Ethan Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), William Cory (Tarrytown, Md.), Hailey Johns (Melbourne, Fla.), Gabe Niles (Bennington, Vt.), Andrew Nichols (Knoxville, Tenn.), and Alexander Rogers (Williamsburg, Va.). Stormy Petrol was comprised of Charlotte Waring (Metuchen, N.J.), Connor Boudreau (West Suffield, Conn.), Hudson Holden (Harpswell, Maine), Eve Lanzafame (Hadley, Mass.), Josh Golden (Arlington, Va.), Cathryn Hegner (San Antonio, Tex.), Will Spada (Huntington, N.Y.), Isaac Adkins (Ukiah, Calif.) and Ned Jobson (Madison, Conn.).\
  • Women's ACC Round 1A (hosted by Connecticut College): The CGA Bears sailed just up the river to Connecticut College to race for the Women's ACC Round 1A. A challenging regatta of light and shifty sailing conditions on the Thames left Coast Guard in 12th overall. Sailing for the Bears were Julia Conneely (Tampa, Fla.), Laura Slovensky (Brookhaven, N.Y.), Allison Nystrom (Centerville, Mass.), and Charlotte McCarthy (Hamden, Conn.).
