Bears Take Top 10 in all Three Spring National Championships

Kings Point, NY -- For the past 11 days CGA sailors have been competing at the 2023 College Sailing National Championships. The team caps off a successful season with a top 10 finish at all three National Championships, including 10th place overall at the Women's Fleet Race Championship, 8th Place overall at the Open Team Race Championship (first time competing at this event), and 7th place overall at the Open Fleet Race Championship.

All three of the Championships were hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and took place from May 23 - June 2.

College Sailing Women's National Championship

At the Women's Nationals the team placed 10th overall, with Stanford University (1st), Yale University (2nd) and Boston College (3rd) taking the podium finishes. The team was represented by Emily Bornarth '24, Leo Krajewski '23 and Mia Quinlan '24 in A Division, and Emma Snead '23, Lauren O'Neill '24, and Laura Slovensky '25 in B Division. Celia Houston '25, Charlotte McCarthy '25 and Julia Conneely '26 were alternates for the event.

The women's championship started with two days of semifinals to qualify the top 18 teams into the final championship. The team battled hard in the Eastern bracket against notable competitors such as Yale University, and the College of Charleston. The team had an impressive performance and finished 2nd overall, only six points behind Yale in 1st. This score securely qualified the team for the finals.

During the Finals the team was presented with challenging conditions. On day one of the Finals 10 races were completed. On day two the breeze did not cooperate, and no races were completed. The team finished in 10th place overall with a very tight point spread.

Emily Bornarth '24, and Mia Quinlan '24 placed 7th overall in A Division. Emma Snead '23, Lauren O'Neill '24, and Laura Slovensky '25 placed 11th overall in B Division.

College Sailing Team Race National Championship

The CGA Bears placed 8th overall which is an extremely strong finish since this is the first year CGA has qualified for this National Championship. Harvard University (1st), Stanford University (2nd), and Brown University (3rd) rounded out the podium finishes.

At the Team Race National Championship, the team was represented by Jack Farrell '23, Matt Kickhafer '23, Charlie Mason '23, Lauren O'Neill '24, Dan Unangst '24, Daniel Neville '25, Nic Reeser '25, Colman Schofield '25, Laura Slovensky '25, and Charlie Pohl '26.

Stage one of the event was a full round robin with all the teams meeting once. The Bears battled hard against the top 16 teams and finished the round robin with an eight out of seven record which allowed them to advance to the top eight (stage two). In the round of eight, The Bears had wins against notably strong teams such as Yale University and Roger Williams University. CGA finished stage two with a two out of five record. The team finished 8th overall with a 10/12 record beating out notable teams such as the U.S. Naval Academy, University of Pennsylvania, and Georgetown University.

College Sailing Open National Championship

At the Open National Championship, the CGA Bears placed 7th overall against the top 18 teams in the country. Stanford University finished in 1st, Yale University finished in 2nd, and Harvard rounded out the podium in 3rd.

The CGA team was represented by Dan Unangst '24, Jack Farrell '23, Nic Reeser '25, and Daniel Neville '25 in A Division and Colman Schofield '25, Lauren O'Neill '24 and Charlie Mason '23 in B Division. Matt Kickhafer '23, Laura Slovensky '25, and Charlie Pohl '26 were alternates.

Just like the women's championship, the Open Nationals started with two days of semifinals to qualify the top 18 teams into the final championship. The team sailed well in an extremely tight race for the top 9 spots in the Western bracket. With only 19 points separating 9th place and 4th place the CGA team had to be precise on the water with strong finishes to ensure a spot in the Finals. At the end of the Semifinals the team finished in 6th place, qualifying them for the Finals. Of note was CGA Sailing's B Division performance: Colman Schofield '25, Charlie Mason '23 and Lauren O'Neill '24 won the Western Semifinal B Division by 17 points.

During the Finals, nine races were completed in each division. The team sailed well and kept climbing during the entire event, capping off the last two races with a 1st place in each Division. The CGA Bears finished in 7th overall beating out other notable teams such as Tufts University and Tulane University.

Dan Unangst '24, Jack Farrell '23, Nic Reeser '25, and Daniel Neville '25 finished 6th overall in A Division. Colman Schofield '25, and Lauren O'Neill '24 finished 4th overall in B Division.
