Baseball Holds Off Westfield State

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Coast Guard was on the road Facing Westfield State, holding off the Owls in a back-and-forth battle to get the win with a final score of 11-8.

The Bears started off the scoring in the top half of the first with Jack Steel grounding out to short to send home John Carroll.

Westfield answered the run scored in the top half with a tally of their own in the home half of the inning. However, Coast Guard pulled ahead again in the third inning with Parker Madden lacing a double into the right-centerfield gap to plate Steel for a 2-1 lead.

The Owls would score twice in the bottom of the third to take their first lead. It didn't last long as the Bears rallied to take the lead in the top of the fourth.

With two runners on, Kael Godshalk plated both with a two-RBI triple to left, putting Coast Guard up, 4-3. A squeeze bunt from Justin Stasiak brought home Godshalk, capping the three-run fourth frame for the Bears.

The lead changed hands once again as the Owls scored four of their own in the bottom half of the fourth, putting the bears down, 7-5.

In the sixth inning, the lead changed for the last time with Coast Guard scrapping across three runs, two of which came home to score on a two-out error, ultimately giving the Bears an 8-7 lead midway through the sixth. The Owls would tie up the game in the seventh inning, but never again take the lead.

Coast Guard would deliver the final blow in the eighth inning, with Percifield connecting on a two-out double to left field, driving in the go-ahead and game-winning run in Stasiak. Steel added another two-out RBI with a single to right, putting the Bears ahead 10-8 after eight innings.

Another insurance run was produced from Stasiak after drawing a run-scoring walk to score the Bears 11th run.

Percifield, Steel, Greg Boland and Godshalk had two hits a piece, while Coast Guard had a total of 12 hits. Godshalk also led in RBIs with three.

Coast Guard will host MIT in the conference opener on April 1st, in a doubleheader beginning at 12 PM
