Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard baseball hosted Norwich in its home opener on Saturday, getting the walk-off win with a final of 5-4.
The Bears struggled to find their defensive rhythm in the first inning, giving up a three-run homer in the top half. However, they started chipping away at the lead with a run coming across in the bottom of the second. Jack Steel tripled, bringing home Grayson Irwin and putting CGA on the board.
Both teams were quiet in the third and fourth before Coast Guard added another in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on, John Carroll singled to bring home Steel. Heading into the sixth inning, the Bears trailed 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Cadets added one more to their lead, extending it back to two.
Into the bottom of the ninth, the Bears were down to their final out, still trailing by two. With Steel on, Blake Carroll doubled to keep the Bears alive. J. Carroll stepped to the plate, now with two runners on. He doubled, bringing them both in and tieing the game. Duthu followed behind with a hit of his own to get the walk-off win for CGA.
The Bears had 13 hits, three of them belonging to Steel, with Duthu and J. Carroll having two a piece. J. Carroll also had three RBIs.
Coast Guard will host Johnson & Wales (RI) on March 21st at 3:30 PM.
