BOSTON, Mass. -- Coast Guard Women's Basketball used a balanced offensive attack to win on the road Saturday afternoon over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Emerson College, 75-67. With the win, the Bears improve to 13-12 (5-5 NEWMAC), and secure the 6th seed in the NEWMAC playoffs. The Lions fall to 8-17 (3-7 NEWMAC) and are eliminated from playoffs.

Senior Jacqueline Ward and junior Kira Wood led the Bears with 16 points each. Ward grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season while dishing out four assists and adding a steal. Freshman Dorothy Stotts added 14 points and two assists, followed by sophomore Glory Blethen with 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block. Sophomore Julia Mann led the Bears with a game-high 12 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and four points. Kelly Hagerty added nine points, and Taylor Lynch chipped in six.

The Bears started off strong, holding the Lions to nine points in the first quarter. Coast Guard extended the lead to nine at half, leading 34-25. The Bears outscored the Lions by one in the third quarter, however, they found themselves tied in the fourth quarter, 60-60. Emerson used a 16-4 run to tie the game, before a Stotts layup put the Bears back up. However, an Emerson 3-pointer gave the Lions their first lead of the game, 63-62. Stotts and Wood each made a layup to put the Bears back up, 66-63. After an Emerson timeout, the Bears continued to dominate with clutch free throws to close out the game, going 7-8 from the line in the final 95 seconds.

The Lions outshot the Bears from the floor (46.6% to 43.5%) and beyond the arc (41.2% to 11.8%), but the Bears managed to force the Lions into 20 turnovers. Coast Guard also dominated the boards, outrebounding Emerson 39-21 and securing 20 offensive rebounds for 17 second-chance points.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, February 22, as they head to MIT for NEWMAC Quarterfinals.
