Bears win at Mount Holyoke to clinch playoff berth

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --

Coast Guard women's basketball won their final game of the regular season Saturday afternoon, February 21, on the road at Mount Holyoke with a final score of 70-49. The Bears' record finished at 13-12 and 5-6 in NEWMAC. Mount Holyoke's record finished at 4-21 and 0-11 in NEWMAC.

What seems like a lopsided score did not start out as such. The shots were not falling for either team as the Coast Guard shot 4-18 from the field and Mount Holyoke shot 6-17 from the field in the first. This slow offensive start gave the Lyons a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was very similar to the first, except the Bears managed to score an equal amount of points to the Lyons (each with 15 points).

The second half is where momentum shifted. The Bears quickly tied the game at 30-30 just over a minute into the third quarter. Coast Guard went on to outscore Mount Holyoke 19-6 the rest of the quarter to make the lead 49-36 with just 10 minutes remaining in the game. In the last quarter the Bears sealed the deal with 3 3-pointers, 5 baskets, and 2-2 from the free throw line. Coast Guard capped off their last game of the regular season with a final score of 70-49.

Senior guard Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.) led all scorers with 24 points. She also finished with 4 assists. Senior guard Taylor Lynch (Madison, Ind.) finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Senior forward Farrah Peterein (Oxnard, Calif.) was all over the stat sheet today with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and a career-high 5 blocks.

With this win, the Bears lock up the 7-seed in the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. They will start playoffs on the road at the 2-seed Babson College Wednesday, February 25, at 7pm EST tip-off. Earlier this season, Coast Guard beat Babson 68-50.
