NEW LONDON, Conn. --
Saturday afternoon, Coast Guard women's basketball suffered their second straight loss. Hosting fellow NEWMAC opponent MIT, Coast Guard would lose a nailbiter 70-65 despite leading for over half of the game.
Â
The MIT Engineers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the first quarter. The Bears slowly took the lead with three 3-pointers and a few layups which put them up 15-11 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. MIT would come back with layups of their own and take the lead back 18-17 at the end of the first quarter. Â
The second quarter would not be as high scoring as Coast Guard only managed to score 12 points compared to MIT's 8. This put the Bears up 29-26 going into the locker room at the half. Â
After a few minutes into the third quarter of a back-and-fourth game, the Bears managed to get as much as a 13 point lead with just a minute left in the third quarter. In that minute remaining, the Engineers scored two quick 3's and a layup to cut the lead to five going into the fourth quarter. Â
In the fourth quarter, it became a battle in the paint. Only one three pointer was made by either team in the final quarter, with MIT eventually getting the better of Coast Guard outscoring them 25-15 in the fourth quarter alone. Three CGA turnovers and four made MIT free throws sealed the fate for the Bears.
Coast Guard finished the game with four players in double digits. Senior guard
Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.) finished with 19 points, dished-out four assists, and recorded four steals.
Taylor Lynch (Madison, Ind.) scored 13 points, and brought-down four rebounds.
Elliot Geer (Jay, Okla.) was all over the stat sheet today with 11 points, eight assists, eight rebounds, four steals, one block, and was perfect from the free throw line.
Olivia Wright (Midlothian, Va.) scored 10 points with four rebounds.
Following this result, the Bears fall to 11-12 on the season and 3-6 in NEWMAC play. The Engineers improve to 13-10 and 7-2 respectively. Â
The regular season is almost complete for the 2025-26 campaign with just one more home game remaining for Coast Guard as they will host Wheaton College (5-18, 1-8 NEWMAC) on Wednesday February 18 for a 6pm EST tip-off.Â
