Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Shannon Shaw had a match-high 17 kills and 12 digs while classmate Carlee Lingle added seven kills to lead Coast Guard to a 3-1 win over Merchant Marine.
After dropping the first set 21-25, the Bears took three in a row (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) to hand the Mariners their second loss of the season. The Bears have won three straight to improve to 8-1 on the season, while Merchant Marine drops to 3-2.
It was the seventh straight time that Coast Guard has beaten Merchant Marine, and the win gives the Bears a 4-0 lead in the 2022-23 Superintendents' Trophy standings, following wins from Men's Soccer, Men's Cross Country, and Women's Cross Country this past weekend.
Senior Noelle Tursky filled the stat columns with 29 assists, six digs, four kills, and six blocks. Elizabeth Atkinson had four kills and six blocks. Carmen Zipf and Kaela France each had seven digs, with Zipf adding four aces and France adding three. Freshmen Vickie Mancine and Sarah Somer each added five digs to help the Bears, while classmate Allie Wildsmith recorded five blocks.
In the opening set, the Bears and Mariners battled back and forth with the Mariners scoring the last three points for the win. Set two continued the battle until a kill from Lingle sent the Bears on a 7-1 run to go up 20-12. Coast Guard used the momentum to secure the win 25-18.
The Bears started set three strong leading 3-1, but both teams rallied to tie it at 15-15. With Wildsmith serving, Coast Guard went on a 5-0 run to go up 20-15. Shaw ended the set with a kill for the Bears to win 25-19.
The final set proved to be another strong showing from both teams, as the scoring went back and forth before the tie at 18-18. From there the Bears went on a 7-0 run to end the set and the match, finalizing it with a block from Tursky and Wildsmith to win 25-18.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they take on the Trinity College Bantams at home at 6 PM.
