Bears defeated at home in straight sets vs #13 Wesleyan

NEW LONDON, Conn. –

After getting off to a late start in Alumni Gymnasium, Coast Guard was defeated in three sets by Wesleyan University (25-7, 25-17, 25-18). The win improves #13 Wesleyan to 16-2 on the season. The Cardinals will next play host to Roger Williams on Tuesday October 27th at 7:00 PM.

The first set was a dominant effort for Wesleyan, who swung at a .696 clip on their way to a 25-7 victory.

In the second however, the Bears hung with the Cardinals. Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Calif.) and Sam Ventimiglia (Key West, Fla.) each had three kills in the second with freshman setter Allie Jenkins (Dripping Springs, Tex.) coming off the bench to play some key time and deliver five assists. In the third, the Bears yet again stayed with Wesleyan but ultimately could not overcome the Cardinal firepower, dropping the final set 25-18.

The Bears were led on the attack by Sam Ventimiglia with nine kills, Corey Lemmer and Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.) behind her with six each. In assists, Allie Jenkins and Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawaii) combined for 23.

For the second consecutive day, Mary Grace Delfino (Alpharetta, Ga.) was dominant at the service line with six aces yesterday and four more today for a total of 10 on the weekend. On the season, the hard-hitting Delfino has 22 aces.

The Bears drop to 12-8 with the loss, they will get back to NEWMAC play on Tuesday October 27th with a 6:00 pm match at WPI. The Engineers of WPI are currently 10-13 after a loss to Colby College earlier today. The WPI match is a key one for both squads with the Engineers currently sitting just half a game back of Coast Guard in the NEWMAC standings.
