Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior John Thigpen had the best outing of his career as he threw seven shutout innings allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high 12 as Coast Guard salvaged a split of a doubleheader at Springfield in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader to close the regular season. The Pride won the opener 13-3 before the Bears won game two 7-1.
With the split, Springfield (19-18, 11-6) wins the NEWMAC West and will be the #2 seed in the tournament next week. Coast Guard (18-14, 9-8) will be the fourth-seed and host #5 MIT on Thursday in an elimination game. The nine conference wins matches the most in program history. The Bears won nine NEWMAC games in 2011 and 2013.
GAME ONE --- SPRINGFIELD 13, COAST GUARD 3 (7 INNINGS)
Noah Bleakley and Ryan Sorgi hit homers in the fourth to tie the game and the Pride score seven runs in the fifth to beat Coast Guard 13-3 in seven innings.
Coast Guard scored twice in the first on an RBI double by Wyatt Duthu and an RBI single by Blake Carroll. The Bears added one more in the second on an RBI single by Duthu for a 3-0 lead.
Duthu had three hits while Justin Stasiak added a pair of hits in the opener for Coast Guard.
Charles Red (1-3) pitched the first four innings and took the loss for Coast Guard.
GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 7, SPRINGFIELD 1
John Thigpen (1-4) allowed just three hits over seven innings, walked two and struck out a career-high 12 to get his first career win.
John Carroll and Cody Fidler each had three hits while Stasiak and and Jack Steel each added a pair of hits in the game two win.
Blake Carroll had an RBI single in the first to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Cody Fidler's RBI double in the third made it 2-0.
Coast Guard scored twice in the fourth on an RBI triple by Justin Stasiak and an RBI single by John Carroll for a 4-0 lead.
The Bears added three more in the sixth on an RBI single by John Carroll, and RBI fielder's choice by Duthu before Carroll stole home on a double steal to push the lead to 7-0.
The Pride would got their run in the ninth.
