Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Springfield scored 16 runs in the fourth to erase a 9-1 deficit and beat Coast Guard 21-9 in seven innings in the first game of a three-game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekend series.
Springfield improves to 18-17 overall and 10-5 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 17-13 overall and 8-7 in conference play
The teams will play a doubleheader at Springfield tomorrow at noon. Coast Guard must win both games to capture the NEWMAC West Championship and secure the #2 seed in next week's conference tournament. If the Bears don't win twice they will play MIT on Thursday in the NEWMAC tournament.
Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the first before Coast Guard got six two out hits to take a 6-1 lead after one.
Greg Boland, John Carroll, Parker Madden all and RBI singles, Nate Nam had a two-run single, Jack Steel had an RBI double while Charles Red also singled in the frame.
Blake Carroll hit his team-leading sixth homer of the season to lead off the second before John Carroll had an RBI triple and scored on a passed ball for a 9-1 lead. The six homers in a season ties him for the second most in program history.
Springfield would send 21 batters to the plate scoring 16 runs in the fourth. 15 straight batters would reach base in the inning.
The Pride added four more in the sixth to close the scoring.
Jack Simonetty led the Pride with three hits including a three-run homer and six RBIs while Michael Barrett and Noah Bleakley also had three hits each in the win.
John Carroll had a single, double and triple while driving in two and scoring two for the Bears while Madden added a pair of hits.
Senior Christian Burzycki had a pinch hit single in the ninth, the first hit of his career in his final home game.
Cody Fidler (5-2) started and took the loss for Coast Guard.
