Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Nat Nam helped Coast Guard celebrate Senior Day with a walk-off single in the tenth in the opener for an 8-7 win before WPI won the nightcap 3-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.
The Bears honored the five seniors, Nam, Christian Burzycki, Cody Fidler, Connor Glynn and Dan Wolf in a pre-game ceremony.
Coast Guard is now 17-10 overall and 8-4 in the NEWMAC while WPI stands at 13-15 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday in a NEWMAC game at Wheaton at 3:30.
GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 8, WPI 7 (10 INNINGS)
Nate Nam's two out walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth gave Coast Guard the game one win 8-7.
The Bears led 7-1 in the seventh before WPI scored two in the seventh and four in the eighth to tie the game 7-7.
Nam led the Bears with three hits while Cody Fidler, John Carroll, Jack Steel and Justin Stasiak each added two hits as Coast Guard had 13 hits in the opener. Stasiak also had the defensive play of the day when he stole a homer from Hand when he timed his jump perfect in right field to make a great catch to lead off the fourth with the Bears leading 3-1.
Andrew Brooks had three hits to lead WPI while Jacob Hand and Martin McCormack each added a pair of hits while Joe Salvon homered for the Engineers.
Salvon's homer gave WPI a 1-0 in the third before Coast Guard scored three in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the sixth for a 7-1 lead despite leaving 11 runners on base in a four inning span.
Hand had the game tying hit, a two-run single in the eighth to tie the game 7-7.
WPI would leave the bases loaded in the top of the tenth and in the home half, John Carroll and moved to second on wild pitch. John Tacchini and Blake George drew walks to load the bases before Nam's game winning hit.
Charles Red pitched well for Coast Guard as he went the five and 1/3 and allowed just one run on six hits and walked two and struck out six. Aidan Andersen (2-0) was great in relief getting the win. Andersen threw three innings and allowed just two hits and an unearned run.
Noah Pins (3-3) took the loss in relief.
GAME TWO – WPI 3, COAST GUARD 2
Alexander Mondro allowed just two runs on two hits over eight innings as WPI won the nightcap 3-2.
Mondro (1-0) walked two and fanned five to get his first win of the season. Ryan Malkowski worked a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.
Coast Guard took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Blake Carroll and an RBI ground out by Greg Boland, but that would be all the Bears could muster in the second game. Nam singled to lead off the game while Boland had a single in the sixth the only two hits for Coast Guard.
The Engineers got a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Jacob Hand and took the lead on a two-run single by Dylan Conners with two outs in the eighth. Connors had two of WPI's five hits in the game two win.
John Thigpen had his best outing of the season as he pitched the first six innings and allowed just two hits and one run while walking two and striking out two.
Wyatt Duthu (3-1) took the loss in relief for Coast Guard.
