Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Blake Carroll had the first two homer game of his career including a two-run shot in the ninth, but Coast Guard's rally fell just short as the Bears, who trailed 9-0 lost to Wheaton 9-8 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Wheaton improves to 16-10 overall and 7-3 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 16-9 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
Liam Goldthwaite (2-2) went the first six innings and allowed just three this and one earned runed while walking one and fanning four to get the win for the Lyons. Dom Cunha allowed the two-run homer to Carroll in the ninth, but picked up his fifth save of the season.
Mike Maher had three hits to lead Wheaton while AJ Guindon, Drew Spirito and Zach DeMattio each added a pair of hits. DeMattio and Anthony Teberio homered in the win.
Carroll was 3 for 3 with a double, two homers, three runs scored and four RBI while Greg Boland added two hits for the Bears.
John Thigpen (0-4) started and allowed four earned runs in one and 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The Coast Guard bullpen closed the game with five scoreless innings led by Aidan Andersen who allowed just two hits over the final three innings.
Wheaton scored a pair of unearned runs in the first and erupted for six runs in the second with an RBI single by Guindon, a two-run single by Spirito and a three-run homer by Teberio for an 8-0 lead.
DeMattio had a solo homer in the fourth as the Lyons led 9-0.
Coast Guard got on the board in the sixth on a two-run homer by Carroll.
The Bears added two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Justin Stasiak and a sacrifice fly by Nate Nam to make the score 9-4.
Coast Guard continued to chip away in the eighth as Boland had an RBI single and John Carroll added an RBI groundout to make the score 9-6.
Carroll hit a two-out, two-tun homer to left in the ninth as the Bears cut the lead to 9-8 before Cuhna closed the game.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night against WPI at 6:00 at Holy Cross, the first of a three-game weekend series.
