Bears Sweep MIT in NEWMAC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Coast Guard baseball swept MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bears, who have won six in a row, improved to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC. MIT dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

GAME ONE- COAST GUARD 13 MIT 9
John Carroll, Jack Steel, and Justin Stasiak each had three RBIs to lead the Bears.

Charles Red had an RBI single to get the Bears on the board first in the top of the first inning. Carroll had a two-run single to give Coast Guard an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the second, the Engineers brought it within one at 3-2 but in the top of the third, Coast Guard scored twice to take a 5-2 lead. MIT scored once in the bottom of the fourth, making it 5-3.

John Carroll hit a home run in the top of the seventh giving Coast Guard a 6-3 advantage. Stasiak followed up with a two-run home run, extending the Bears lead, 8-3. Blake Carroll had an RBI single to make it 9-3 in the top of the seventh.

MIT started inching its way back, as Malachi Soqui hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the Engineers deficit to 9-6. Kyle Sonadres followed with a two-run home run to bring MIT within one at 9-8.

Jack Steel had a two-run double in the top of the eighth to give Coast Guard an 11-8 advantage but MIT answered in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double from Soqui to make it 11-9.

Coast Guard scored twice more to put the game away with a 13-9 final. Brock Soletti earned the win for Coast Guard and improved to 3-0 on the season.

GAME TWO- COAST GUARD 8 MIT 3
Cody Fidler led Coast Guard with three RBIs as he went 2-3 at the plate. Jack Steel, Wyatt Duthu, and Greg Boland each had an RBI in the Bears second win of its doubleheader.

Filder got the Bears up on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single to right field. Boland got on base on an error that sent Blake Carroll home, giving Coast Guard a 2-0 lead. The Bears scored six more times through the seventh inning and shut out MIT and as Coast Guard took an 8-0 lead in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, MIT scored three more, but the Bears ended with the 8-3 final.

Charles Red got the win for Coast Guard, as he had three strikeouts. He improved to 1-2 on the season.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, April 5, at home at 3:30 PM against Babson in a single game.
