Bears Beat Smith on the Road

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-- Senior Katherine Pittman recorded six points to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 16-12 victory over Smith on the road on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Action. The Bears improved to 9-4 on the season and 5-1 in NEWMAC play. Smith dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Pittman scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Bears with six points. Freshman Laine Weber, junior Gianna Cascio, and sophomore Sarah Skurat, all scored three goals each. Freshman Caitlyn Coates added two goals and Brenda Anderson had one tally for the Bears. Sophomore Mia Becker picked up a team-high seven draw controls.

Gia Arancio led Smith with four goals and one assist. Sadie Tschider scored three times for the Pioneers, and Jennie Arancio added two more in the loss. Sydney Havlick scored once for Smith, and Stella Alphas recorded two goals, one assist, and a game-high, 10 draw controls.

Smith jumped out to a 2-1 lead to open the game, but the Bears answered with three straight goals including, two from Weber and one from Pittman for a 4-2 lead. Smith scored the final two goals of the quarter to tie it 4-4.

Anderson opened the second quarter with her lone goal of the game giving the Bears a 5-4 advantage before Smith tied it back up 5-5. The Bears scored the next three to take an 8-5 lead. Arcancio and Alphas scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 8-7 at the half.

The Bears scored four times in the third quarter, and Smith scored twice as Coast Guard held a 12-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Smith scored the opening two goals of the fourth quarter, bringing the Pioneers within one, 12-11, but Coast Guard answered with a four-goal run to extend its lead, 16-11. Smith scored once more for the 16-12 final.

Sophomore Devon McCue made four saves in the win for the Bears. Smith's goalkeeper Alyssa Schams had 10 saves in the loss for the Pioneers.

Coast Guard had a 16-15 advantage in draw controls and a 33-22 advantage in shots.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, April 20, on the road at Mount Holyoke at 6 PM.
