NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard captured its first ever New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship beating Babson 6-3 in the battle of conference unbeatens to snap a 13-game losing streak in the series against the Beavers beating them for the first time since 2012. It was a rematch of last year's NEWMAC championship match.
The Bears become just the third to win a NEWMAC regular season championship joining Babson and MIT. Coast Guard has won six straight and the Bears are now 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC while Babson drops to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Coast Guard will be the top-seed in the NEWMAC tournament and host a semifinal match on April 30th, if the Bears win, they will then host the championship match on May 1st.
Coast Guard got the afternoon started by sweeping the three doubles matches as Myles Decoste and Sean Dreher won 8-4 at #1, Charles Norman and Lucas Arora were 8-6 winners at #2 and Paul Choi and Banks Evans won 8-6 at #3 doubles for the 3-0 lead heading to singles action.
Decoste won 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles and Norman clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 singles. Evans also won his singles match at 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at #3 singles.
