CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
United Stats Coast Guard Academy tennis wound up on the wrong end of a 6-1 result as they fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 11th. The lone point came from singles and the Bears won a match at doubles.
Coast Guard moves to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in conference play, while the Engineers improves to 9-5 overall and 4-0 league opponents. MIT will look to stay undefeated in the NEWMAC on Tuesday, April 14th, at Babson College (11-4, 3-0 NEWMAC).
MIT entered the day ranked 26th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Rankings. The Engineers claimed the doubles point with a 2-1 effort. The one pairs loss was at the hands of the Bears #1 duo of
Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) and
Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.), who defeated MIT's top partnership of
Grant Gallagher and
Adam Sun in a 6-2 effort.
The lone winner at singles for Coast Guard was
Konnor Eslinger (St. Louis, Mo.) who took down
Ethan Nguyen at #4 in a three-set win. The Bears' sophomore fell behind after a 3-6 first set, but evened it in the second with a 6-3 effort before taking the tiebreaker at 10-1.
Coast Guard tennis will be back at it tomorrow at home, hosting a non-conference meet-up with Vassar College (10-5). The Brewers are ranked 38th in the ITA rankings, and swept the Bears to take last season's contest in Poughkeepsie.
