This past weekend Bears Sailing competed in two Nationals Championships in different disciplines, the Glenn S. Foster Trophy for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship and the John F. Kennedy Cup for the ICSA Big Boat National Championship.
NORFOLD, Va. -- The ICSA Singlehanded National Championship was hosted by Old Dominion University where 18 sailors that either qualified or were selected to compete for the title. The Bears were represented by Nicholas Reeser '25 who finished 7th in the Championship as a freshman. Conditions on both days saw winds from the East-Southeast ranging from 5-16 knots. Nine races were sailed on Saturday in shifty conditions where Reeser was in a tie for 6th at the end of racing. On Sunday five more races were sailed with the Bears finishing third for the day and moved up to fifth overall. This marked the fifth straight year the Bears have competed in this Championship.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The ICSA Big Boat National Championship for the John F. Kennedy Cup is hosted annually by the Naval Academy in their fleet of Navy 44's. The Bears qualified for this competition by placing fifth in the McMillan Cup weeks earlier and looked to build on that. The Bears were represented by the experienced team of Kurt Biedermann '23, Nate Olmsted '23, Rachel Pelton '23, Charles Tulevech '23, Luc Bay '24, Harlan Brady '24, Jacob Earnshaw '24 and William O'Leary '24. Strong southerly winds ranging from 15-20 knots with large waves allowed the organizers to run four races on Saturday. The Bears won three races but a rules infraction had them disqualified from a race dropping them to 7th overall. On Sunday, looking to avenge themselves, the Bears sailed strong finishing second on the last two races to move up to third overall.
Next weekend, the Bears will travel to San Diego, CA for the ICSA Match Race National Championship to end the fall season.
