This past weekend CGA Sailing competed at three events – The Storm Trysail Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta at Larchmont Yacht Club, the Hewitt Trophy Regatta at Bowdoin College in Maine, and the Open Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship at St. Mary's College in Maryland.
ST. MARY'S CITY, MD -- The Dinghy Team competed at the Open Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship round 1B, hosted by St. Mary's College. The team sailed extremely well, placing 5th out of 18, qualifying them for the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championships where they will compete against the top teams in college sailing. Leading the team was 1/c Charles Mason with crew 1/c Jack Farrell. The pair sailed solidly throughout the event and posted six top-5 finishes in A-division to their score line. 3/c Coleman Schofield and 2/c Lauren O'Neill also posted six top-5 finishes to the score line allowing the CGA Sailing Bears to secure their qualifying position. Also supporting the event were 1/c Matthew Kickhafer, 2/c Daniel Unangst, and 4/c Charles Pohl.
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Dinghy Team also competed at the Hewitt Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin College, the Bears placed 5th out of 12 teams navigating through light and shifty sea-breeze conditions, unusual conditions for the Bowdoin sailing area. 3/c Nicholas Reeser skippering with 3/c Peter McGonagle crewing ended up with a very respective 3rd place in A-division. 2/c Jonathan Glander with 3/c Daniel Neville, and 3/c Charlotte McCarthy placed 6th in B-division.
LARCHMONT, NY -- The CGA Sailing Offshore Bears competed this past weekend in the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (IOR), run by the Storm Trysail Club and hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club. The IOR is a special event which began in the 1970's in which each college team sails a borrowed keelboat supplied by the regatta organizers. Thirty-four teams from all over the country as well as Canada attended the event. Four races were sailed on Saturday and 3 races were sailed on Sunday. CGA Sailing sent two teams to compete in the IOR. Sailing aboard the J44 Breakaway, 1/c Rachel Pelton, 1/c Kurt Biedermann, 1/c Charles Tulevech, 1/c Nathan Olmsted, 2/c William O'Leary, 2/c Harlan Brady, 2/c Myles Piotrowski, and 2/c Jacob Earnshaw. The team on Breakaway sailed in the very competitive Large-PHRF division ending up just off of the podium in 4th place. The second CGA Sailing Offshore team sailed onboard Gray Matter in the competitive J105 One Design Class. The crew consisted of 1/c Lea Walker, 1/c Nael Alami, 1/c John Taylor, 2/c Carter Boykin-Holland, 2/c Coleman Pepperd, and 3/c Kobi Weiland. The team onboard Gray Matter sailed an outstanding event, placing first overall in the J 105 class and won the "Howie Mcmichael Memorial Trophy" for 2nd place overall in the IOR regatta.
