Bears Qualify for the 2022 Kennedy Cup

Weekend 10/22 - 10/23

This past weekend the Bears competed in five events along the east coast. The team competed well at the McMillan Cup hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy which secures them a place at the 2022 Kennedy Cup which is the equivalent of the College Sailing Offshore Nationals.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The McMillan Cup held at Navy in Annapolis, MD is one of the premier Offshore events of the year and is the oldest event in College Sailing, initially sailed in 1928. This year's regatta saw very tough competition and the full gamut of conditions with no races sailed Saturday due to no wind, and four races sailed on Sunday in very windy and stormy conditions. USCGA Sailing was led by skipper Kurt Biedermann '23, headsail trimmer Rachel Pelton '23, mainsail trimmer Charles Tulevech '23, mast and strategist Nate Olmsted '23, tactician William O'Leary '24, headsail trimmer Jake Earnshaw '24, pit Harlan Brady '24, bow Luc Bay '24 and alternates Nael Alami '23 and Myles Piotrowski '24. The team was able to secure 5th place in the regatta, notably beating Mass Maritime and Maine Maritime, allowing the team to qualify for the 2022 Kennedy Cup.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Also in Annapolis, the team attended the College Sailing Small Keelboat Regatta. CGA Sailing sent two teams, with CGA A made up of skipper Carter Boykin-Holland '24, middle Cheyenne Waters '24, trimmer Coleman Peppered '24, and bow Ethan Brown '25. CGA B was led by skipper Parker O'Sullivan '25, middle Hailey Johns '25, trimmer Andrew Nichols '25, and bow Sean Sullivan '25. Both teams navigated light and extremely choppy waters on Saturday, with Sunday giving the opposite conditions including gusty wind and minimal waves. CGA A secured 3rd place overall and CGA B secured 6th place overall, notably beating Kings Point as well as 2 of 3 Navy Teams competing.

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The dinghy squad competed in three regattas. At home the team hosted the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Finals, which is the most competitive Open regatta of the fall season. The team was represented by Dan Unangst '24 and Jack Farrell '23 in A Division, and Colman Schofield '25 and Lauren O'Neill '24 in B Division. Matt Kickhafer '23, Charles Mason '23, and Charlie Pohl '26 were alternates for the regatta. The conditions were challenging on the Thames River. On Saturday teams were met with shifty and light breeze, and on Sunday the dominant factor was the current. The team finished 9th overall against the top 18 teams in the country, beating out notable teams such as Kings Point, Stanford, and Boston College. Unangst and Farrell finished 5th overall in A Division, and in B Division, Schofield and O'Neill finished in 9th.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The team also competed at the Yale Women's Interconference hosted by Yale University. CGA was represented by Emily Bornarth '24, and Sydney Motherway '24 in A Division and Emma Snead '23, Celia Houston '25, Laura Slovensky '25, and Leo Krajewski '23 in B Division. The conditions on day one were extremely light and the race committee was unable to get off any races. On Sunday the team sailed eight total races and ended up in 6th overall out of 16 teams. Bornarth and Motherway tied for 4th in A Division but lost the tie breaker placing them in 5th. Snead, Slovensky, and Krajewski finished 7th in B Division.
