Bears Advance to Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Finals and Win A-Division on Home Waters

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The team sailed at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship 1A (ACC) hosted by Harvard. Emily Bornarth '24 and Sydney Motherway '24 represented the team in A Division, with Emma Snead '23, and Laura Slovensky '25 sailing in B Division. Leo Krajewski '23 and Celia Houston '25 were alternates for the event. The team saw moderate and very shifty conditions on Saturday and very windy conditions Sunday. The Bears finished in sixth place overall against some of the top teams in the country. With only the top nine teams moving on, this position advances them to the 2022 ACC Finals hosted by Kings Point Oct. 15-16.

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The team also hosted the Danmark Trophy at home. The Danmark Trophy is among the largest and deepest interconference college events on the fall schedule, with some teams traveling great lengths to reach USCGA, such as North Carolina State University, Tulane, the University of Wisconsin, St. Mary's College of Maryland, USNA, Hobart and William Smith, Georgetown University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. The Danmark is a historic regatta, hosted by CGA for decades in honor of the Danmark training vessel. This ship was used by the Coast Guard to train approximately 5000 cadets during WWII. This event is one of the "original" and longest standing collegiate competitions in college sailing history.

The team was represented by Dan Unangst '24, Jack Farrell '23, and Jonathan Glander '24 in A-Division, and Nicholas Reeser '25, Charlotte McCarthy '25, and Charlie Mason '23 in B-Division. The team was met with very strong breeze for most of the weekend causing the race committee to cut down to one fleet on Sunday. The Bears sailed incredibly well to finish second place overall leading third place by 34 points. In A-Division, Unangst, Farrell, and Glander took a commanding fisrt place, beating out Brown by 18 points. Reeser, McCarthy, and Mason finished in a strong fifth place in B-Division. The home team was helped by Will Spada '26, Luke Slosar '26, Sarah Krajewski '26, Julia Conneely '26, Bradley Whitteway '26, Charles Pohl '26, Jonathan Glander '24, and Aiana Cayao '26 who all aided in race management. The race committee crew did an amazing job getting races off in some very challenging conditions.

ITHACA, NY -- The Bears also traveled SUNY Maritime for the New York Maritime Fall Open. The team was represented by Jack Derry '25 and Daniel Neville '25 in A-Division and Luke Zylinski '26 and Mia Quinlan '24 in B-Division. The team was met with very heavy breeze on Saturday. The Race committee tried two races with both FJ's and 420s on the water but ultimately decided that the conditions were not conducive to FJs. The team sailed eight races in A-Division and six races in B-Division, and after day one the team was sitting in second place to Cornell. Sunday the wind was even stronger, and the race committee was only able to get in one race before calling it for the day. The Bears finished a strong fourth place overall and third and fifth place in A- and B-Division, respectively.

RYE, NY -- The team also traveled to the American Yacht Club to participate in the second weekend of the American Yacht Club Fall Series Regatta. Cadets were slated to race on borrowed sailing vessels Rebelle and Gemini. Unfortunately, racing was canceled for both days due to heavy weather conditions. While no racing took place, this concluded the two-weekend series, leaving Rebelle first in class and Gemini third in class. The team was represented by Carter Boykin-Holland '24, Collman Peppered '24, Myles Piotrowski '24, Charlotte Waring '26, Harlan Brady '24, Joshua Golden '26, Connor Boudreau '26 on Rebelle, and William O'Leary '24, Nate Olmsted '23, Charles Tulevech '23, Rachel Pelton '23, Sean Sullivan '25, Jacob Earnshaw '24 on Gemini.
