Bears Rally to Pick Up First NEWMAC Win

NORTON, Mass. – Tyler Perez had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Garrett Drummond also added 18 points to go seven assists and Coast Guard used a late second half 13-2 run to beat Wheaton 83-78 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard snapped a five-game slide and picked up its first conference win of the season and are now 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton dropped its ninth straight and the Lyons are now 5-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Wheaton, which led by as many as 13 in the second half, held a 66-62 lead with six minutes left before the Bears 13-2 run gave Coast Guard a 75-68 lead capped on a 3-pointer by Ben Yagey with 58 seconds left. The Lyons got as close as 81-78 with nine seconds left, but Yagey made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to ice the game.

Yagey finished with 16 points while Bryce VanderWiere added a career-high 11 points off the bench in the win.

The Bears were 28 of 70 from the floor (40 percent) and made 11 of 25 from 3-point range while Wheaton was 28 of 62 (45.2 percent) while making five of 19 from behind the arc.

Coast Guard jumped out to an 8-2 lead and had an 11-4 lead following a trey by Yagey with 14:04 left in the first half before Wheaton scored eight straight to take a 12-11 lead with 11:38 left in the half.

Perez hit a three with 7:12 left to give the Bears a 21-20 lead before Wheaton once again scored eight straight to open up a 28-21 lead with 2:55 left in the opening half.
 
The Bears closed the half on a 10-3 spurt and the game was tied 31-31 at the break.

Wheaton outscored the Bears 20-7 in the first five minutes of the second half taking 51-38 with 14:55 left.

The Lyons led 60-50 with 10:11 left before the Bears used a 12-3 run to trim the deficit to 63-62 following a 3-pointer by Brunswick with 6:16 remaining.

Coast Guard took the lead for good 67-66 on a 3-pointer by Drummond with 4:32 left. VanderWiere would score the Bears' next five points pushing the lead to 72-68 with 1:40 left.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host WPI in a NEWMAC game at 7:00.
