Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Giannis Chatziveroglou and Ian Hinkley each had 16 points leading MIT to a 73-60 win over Coast Guard in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for the Bears.
Coast Guard, which won the 2020 NEWMAC Championship, was playing its first conference game since winning the championship.
MIT improves to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference while Coast Guard playing its first game since Dec. 8th drops to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
Garrett Drummond led the Bears with 18 points while Jack Brunswick (12) and Tyler Perez (10) were also in double figures for the Bears. Cameron Brown had a career-high eight points all in the first half for Coast Guard while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Declan Rooney had a team-high six assists.
The Bears shot 35.6 percent (21-59) and were seven of 19 from behind the arc while MIT shot 52.6 percent (30-57) and made seven of 17 from 3-point range.
MIT used an 8-2 run in the first half to take an 18-10 lead with 11:49 left in the first half.
Coast Guard would score six straight to make the score 18-16 before the Engineers used a 13-2 run to open up a 31-18 lead with 6:26 left in the half. The Bears answered with a 9-2 run to make the score 33-27 with 2:06 left. MIT led 35-29 at the half.
The Engineers scored six straight to take a 47-37 lead with 13:50 left. Coast Guard would cut the deficit to 53-47 on a 3-point by Jack Brunswick with 9:47 left.
MIT would answer with a 7-2 spurt taking a 60-49 lead with 6:42 left. The Bears scored five straight cutting the deficit to 60-54 on a layup by Madison Maloney with 4:19 left. MIT leading 62-57 with 2:57 left would use a 7-2 run to put the game way taking a 69-59 lead with a minute left.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when they host Clark in a NEWMAC game at 1:00.
