BABSON PARK, Mass. – Top-seeded Babson beat second-seeded Coast Guard 5-3 to win its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship and the Beavers will now compete in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014.
Coast Guard, which was also seeking its first NEWMAC championship, was making its first NEWMAC championship match appearance since 2011. Babson has now eliminated the Bears from the NEWMAC tournament for the fifth straight time.
Babson beat Coast Guard 5-4 last weekend in New London in the regular season finale to secure the top seed and the right to host the championship match.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles matches as Kyle Fager and Chris Norman won 8-4 at #1 doubles and Myles Decoste and Sean Dreher posted an 8-6 win at #2 doubles.
In singles action, after Babson won at #2 singles, Sean Dreher posted a 6-0, 7-5 win at #4 singles as the Bears held a 3-2 lead.
The Beavers tied the match 3-3 with a win at #3 singles and took the lead 4-3 with a three set win at #6 singles.
Babson won the championship with a 6-4, 7-5 win at #1 singles.
Coast Guard finishes the season 3-4 while Babson remains unbeaten at 6-0.
