Bears Battle #14 Wheaton Before Falling in NEWMAC Semifinals

NORTON, Mass. –Coast Guard battled the No. 14 team in the nation Wheaton in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semfinals, but the Lyons held off the Bears 3-1 in the opener and 2-1 in 12 innings to sweep the best of three semifinal series.

Wheaton has had the Bears number lately as the Lyons have now beat Coast Guard 18 straight times dating back to the 2013 season.

The Lyons beat Coast Guard 10-4 and 18-3 two weeks ago in the Bears final games of the regular season.

Wheaton, the second seed in the tournament, improves to 14-2 on the season and advances to the NEWMAC championship series while Coast Guard, the third seed, finishes 3-7.

GAME ONE – WHEATON 3, COAST GUARD 1

Gavin Reily threw eight solid innings allowing just one run on five hits in the game one win.

Reily (5-1) scattered five hits, walked two and struck out nine to get the win.

Nate Ralph (1-3) pitched well for Coast Guard allowing just two earned runs, walking one and striking out six in 7 1/3 innings, but was the tough luck loser in this final career game. 

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Charles Red in the second.

The Lyons pulled even in the home half with an unearned run.

Zach DeMattio's solo homer to left gave Wheaton the lead for good 2-1 before the Lyons added an insurance fun in the eighth on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

Red had a career-high three hits to lead the Bears as he was 3 for 4.

GAME TWO – WHEATON 2, COAST GUARD 1 (12 INNINGS)

DeMattio's one-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th. ended the Bears upset bid as the Lyons outlasted the Bears 2-1.

Wheaton's Griffin Young and Coast Guard's PJ Gravalec matched zeros for the first six innings.

Young took a no-hitter into the seventh before Blake Carroll got the Bears first hit with one out in the seventh and scored on an RBI single by Greg Boland as the Bears took a 1-0 lead.

Wheaton tied the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Spirito.

Gravalec, in the final appearance of his career, had his best outing of the season going seven innings and scattering seven hits while allowing just one run while walking one and striking out three. Connor Glynn pitched one hitless inning of relief.

Dan Wolf (0-1) was impressive as well as he threw three hitless innings before allowing the winning run in the 12th.

Boland had two of Coast Guard's four hits in the game two loss.
