Box Score 2 NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Freshman John Carroll had four hits in game two as Coast Guard had 22 hits in the nightcap and beat Emerson 15-7 to salvage a split of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader after overcoming a seven-run deficit in the opener before falling 14-8 at the New England Baseball Complex.
The Bears are now 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while Emerson is 1-3 both overall and in conference play.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Babson in the home opener, a doubleheader beginning at noon.
GAME ONE: EMERSON 14, COAST GUARD 8
In a wild opener, Coast Guard overcame a 7-0 deficit with a trio of homers and took an 8-7 lead in the eighth before Emerson responded with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 14-8 win.
Emerson scored five times in the third for a 7-0 lead.
In the fourth, Justin Stasiak had a two-run double and Nate Nam followed with his first career homer, a two-run shot to left to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Cody Fidler hit the first homer of his career, also a two-run shot, in the fifth as the Bears made the score 7-6.
Blake Carroll's solo homer to left in the seventh tied the game 7-7.
Coast Guard took the lead 8-7 on an RBI double by Stasiak in the eighth.
Quinton Copeland's two-run homer in the eighth broke an 8-8 tie and highlighted the seven run inning for Emerson.
Stasiak led Coast Guard with three hits and three RBI's while Greg Boland, Nam, Carroll and Fidler each had two hits in the loss.
Mark Stutts (1-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed seven runs, three earned in the final third innings. Dan Wolf threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief for the Bears and allowed two hits.
Eight of the Lions 14 runs were unearned as the Bears made five errors.
GAME TWO: COAST GUARD 15, EMERSON 7
John Carroll was 4 for 6 with a double and two RBI's while Nate Nam and Tom Ankers each had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Bears 22 hit attack in the 15-7 win to salvage the split.
Coast Guard scored five in the top of the first as Ankers started the scoring with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Charles Red and John Carroll followed with RBI singles before Dylan Donahue capped the inning with an RBI double for a 5-0 lead.
The Bears leading 5-2 would again erupt a five run inning, this time in the fifth.
Stasiak and Ankers had RBI singles while Nam and Blake Carroll ripped RBI doubles as the Bears took a 10-2 lead.
Emerson would cut the deficit to 10-5 in the sixth before Greg Boland's three-run double in the seventh gave the Bears a 13-5 lead. John Carroll added an RBI double later in the inning and Blake Carroll's RBI ground out in the eighth pushed the lead to 15-5.
Stasiak, Blake Carroll, Boland, Fidler, Red and Donahue each had two hits in the win.
Lukas Caskey (1-0) got the win in relief as he went 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run on one hit and struck out three.
