Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jack Brunswick had a game and career-high 21 points including a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line while Madison Maloney added a career-high 19 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds leading host Coast Guard to a 91-68 win over Mitchell in the season opener for both teams.
The returning players from last year's NEWMAC champion team received their NCAA rings in a pre-game ceremony while the team also honored its three seniors, Paul Costain, J.T. Cox and Yonas Gordon before tipoff.
Garrett Drummond (13) and Cox (11) also scored in double figures for the Bears.
Hunter Baillargeon and Elijah Baidoo each had 16 points to lead Mitchell while Jalen Benson added ten points for the Mariners.
The Bears shot 39.7 percent in the win (29-73) while hitting 9 of 28 from 3-point range. Mitchell was 22 of 63 from the floor (34.9 percent) and made 6 of 22 from behind the arc.
Mitchell led 15-14 with 13:25 left in the first half before the Bears used a 13-3 run to open up a 27-18 lead with 10:19 remaining in the half.
Coast Guard led 35-37 before the Mariners ran off eight straight to tie the score 35-35 with 4:17 left.
The Bears would answer that run with eight straight of their own for a 43-35 lead with 3:17 left in the half and Coast Guard led 52-43 at the break.
Mitchell's first field of the second half wasn't until a Baillargeon layup with 12:42 as the Bears opened the half on a 13-5 run to take a 65-48 lead with 12:32 left.
The Mariners cut the deficit to 66-59 with an 11-1 run capped on a 3-pointer by Baillargeon with 9:49 remaining.
Coast Guard answered with a 10-2 run to open a 76-61 lead with 7:24 to put the game away.
