Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y – Garrett Drummond had a season-high 25 points leading Coast Guard to a 70-55 win over archrival Merchant Marine in a non-conference game.
Coast Guard was in complete control throughout the game as the Bears led 62-31 with 8:37 left before the Mariners used a 20-1 run to cut the deficit to 63-51 with 2:31 left.
The Bears shot a season-highs from both the field (45.3 percent) and 3-point range eight of 20 (40 percent) in the win.
Ben Yagey added nine points for the Bears while Tyler Perez had a team-high 10 rebounds as Coast Guard beat the Mariners for the fourth straight time.
Coast Guard now holds a 5-1 edge this season in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy, where a point is awarded for each win in every sport between the two rivals.
The Bears improve to 2-6 on the season while Merchant Marine drops to 2-4
Coast Guard jumped out to a 12-2 lead and closed out the half with an 18-3 run to take a 34-15 lead into the half. The Bears shot 43.3 percent in the half (13-30) while the Mariners were just 5 of 30 from the floor and 1 of 14 from 3-point in range in the opening half. Drummond led the way with 12 first half points.
In the second half, Coast Guard used a 12-2 spurt to push the lead to 54-26 with 13:09 left and the Bears led by as many as 31 at 62-31 with 8:37 left.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night at Mitchell at 7:30.
