Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Billy Whelan had 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half leading Connecticut College to a 79-70 a non-conference game over Coast Guard.
Whelan came off the bench to hit 5 of 9 from 3-point range and was 8 of 13 from the floor and six for six from the foul line.
Cam Schainfeld and Jarron Flynn each added 17 points in the win for the Camels, who are now 2-3. Ben Rice led Conn. College with 11 rebounds.
Jarrod Jackson had a career-high 14 points to lead Coast Guard while Garrett Drummond added 11 points and a game-high six assists for the Bears. Madison Maloney had a game-high 12 rebounds for Coast Guard which drops to 1-6.
The Camels shot 45.8 percent from the floor (27-59) and connected on 10 of 24 from behind the arc (41.7 percent). Coast Guard was 23 of 63 (36.5 percent) from the field and hit 7 of 22 from 3-point range.
Coast Guard would score seven straight to build a 34-26 lead with five minutes left in the first half, its biggest lead of the game.
The Camels outscore the Bears 12-6 to cut the deficit to 40-38 at halftime.
Coast Guard held a 48-46 lead before the Camels scored 10 straight taking the lead for good with a 56-48 lead with 11:54 left.
The Bears got as close at 74-69 on a 3-pointer by Jack Brunswick with 1:07 left.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday at archrival Merchant Marine at 2:00.
