Box Score WENHAM, Mass.-- Junior Jacqueline Ward had a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists, and sophomore Kira Wood scored a career and game-high 24 points to lead Coast Guard women's basketball to an 83-74 victory over Gordon in the opening night of the Gordon Classic. The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Fighting Scots drop to 0-2.
Senior Kyra Hartman added 18 points and sophomore Lily Mika had 11 points for the Bears. Senior Emma Puddington grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Serianna Anderson and Madison Wynbeek both had 14 points each to lead Gordon. Caleigh Williams and Wynbeek both had a team-high seven rebounds for the Fighting Scots.
The Bears were down 44-35 at the half but went on a 10-point run to open the third quarter and take a 45-44 lead with 5:22 left. At 3:45 Ward made a free-throw that sparked a 12-point run to give Coast Guard a 57-52 edge.
Coast Guard maintained the lead throughout the fourth quarter as Wood went 3-4 from three-point range and put away two free-throws for 11 points as the Bears secured the 83-72 victory.
The Bears shot 41.3% from the field and brought down 41 boards.
Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow for the second day of the Gordon Classic at 1 PM against Amherst.
