Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y.-- Coast Guard men's basketball fell 92-86 against Brockport in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament on Friday night. The Bears had their seven-game win streak snapped as the Golden Eagles advance to the next round of the tournament. Coast Guard finishes the year 14-14 and Brockport improves to 25-3 and 14-0 at their home court.
Six Golden Eagles scored in double figures in their victory. Tyler Collins led the way with 16 points, Justin Sunmers had 15 points from the bench, Wallace Jahidi added 14. Devante Hagins chipped in with 13, Montgomery Stroman had 11, and Antonia Alvarez scored 10.
Senior Packy Witkowski led Coast Guard with 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior Justin Kane added 17 points, classmate Noah Baldez scored 16, and Sean Graytok was the final Bear in double figures with 12 points, including four three-pointers.
Witkowski, who was named to the All-conference second team this year, set the Bears single-season record with 88 3-pointers this season. He is tied for third at the Academy with 1,518 points and he is second with 257 three-pointers. Packy holds single-game school records with 40 points and 10 three-pointers which he set last year in a win over Conn. College.
Baldez, who earned All-conference honors last year, is 10th all-time at the Academy with 1,174 points, fourth on the Bears all-time list with 297 assists and fifth with 142 steals.
Kane is 14th all-time with 1,075 points and tied for ninth with 678 rebounds.
Through the opening five minutes, the Golden Eagle maintained a four point lead. A dunk by Kane at 15:13 would bring the Bears within two, 13-11 but he followed up with a three pointer on the next possession to give the Bears their first lead, 14-13. Drummond and Witkowski added the next five points for Coast Guard as they extended their lead, 19-15.
Devante Hagins tied it up at 12:29 with a dunk for Brockport, 19-19. Drummond and Kane answered with four more points to take a 23-19 advantage. With the scored tied 28-28, Sean Graytok made a huge three pointer for the Bears, that sparked an 8-2 run to give Coast Guard a 36-30 lead.
Brockport went on a 12-2 run of their own to take back the lead, 42-38. Collins made a buzzer beater with .6 seconds left in the half to take a 47-43 lead.
Baldez opened the half with a layup to bring the Bears, with two at 47-45. Wallace and Alvarez added five points to extend Brockport's lead 56-47. Graytok made his third three-pointer of the night that sparked a 13-2 run for the Bears, including five consecutive free throws from Witkowski that gave Coast Guard a 60-58 lead with 12:48 remaining. Brockport answered with the next eight points to take back their lead, 66-60.
Witkowski scored a three, to cut the Coast Guard, 71-69 with 6:22 remaining. Stroman responded with a three of his own as the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run for a 78-69 advantage with 5:04 left. The Bears battled back but Brockport held on to their lead as they took the 92-86 final.
Coast Guard shot 42.9% (30-70) from the field and 35.5% (11-31) from behind the arc. Brockport outrebounded the Bears 47-39.
