Gravalec, Sullivan Fire Shutouts as Bears Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Brett Sullivan threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in the opener while PJ Gravalec fired a four hitter with a career-high 11 punch outs in the second game as Coast Guard swept Wisconsin Lutheran 3-0 and 16-0 to wrap up its southern swing at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Nolan Johnson led the Bears at the plate with three hits in each game, going 6 for 7 on the day. He returns north with a .500 average (11-22) and a team-high .813 slugging percentage.

Blake Carroll, who hit safely in all seven games on the trip, leads the team with a .522 batting average.

Gravalec allowed just one unearned run did not walk a batter and fanned 17 in his two starts on the trip while Sullivan also allowed just one unearned run, walked just one struck out 17.

GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 3, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 0

Sullivan (1-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth before a one out pinch hit single by Carter Raabe broke up the no hit attempt. He had seven punch outs through the first three innings. He did not walk a batter and faced just two batters over the minimum in the win.

Cody Fidler's two-out RBI single in the fifth snapped a scoreless tie and scored Blake Carroll, who doubled with two outs.

The Bears added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run infield single scoring Alex Cordes and Johnson.

Johnson was 3 for 3 with a double while Carroll and Donahue each added two hits for Coast Guard, which won four of its last five to finish the trip 4-3.

The Bears are scheduled to host Mitchell on Tuesday at 3:30 on Tuesday. The NEWMAC cancelled the conference portion of the season earlier this afternoon.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 16, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 0

The Bears erupted for seven runs in the first inning and Gravalec fired his second complete game win of the season.

Carroll, Greg Boland and Nate Nam all had RBI singles in the first while the big hit was a three-run double by Alex Cordes.

Gravalec, who also did not walk a batter, retired the first eight hitters he faced and struck out the side in the fifth while improving to 2-0.

Coast Guard would add single runs in the third and fourth before hanging seven spot in the sixth.

In the sixth, Boland had an RBI single, Johnson delivered a two-run double and Justin Stasiak closed out the scoring with a pinch hit, two-run single.

Johnson was 3 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored while Boland added a pair of hits in the win.
