Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. – FDU-Florham scored five unearned runs in the fifth en route to a 9-2 win over Coast Guard at the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Devils would have just one earned run in the win to improve to 4-4 while the Bears drop to 2-3 on the season.
Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by Greg Boland scoring Blake Carroll, who singled earlier in the inning.
Mark Stutts, making his first career start, threw four scoreless innings before an error in the fifth led to five runs and a 5-1 deficit. Stutts worked 4 2/3 innings allowing four hits and four unearned runs while walking three and striking out five to take the tough luck loss.
The Devils added single runs in the sixth and seventh and two more in the eighth for a 9-1 lead.
Coast Guard scored its final run in the ninth on an RBI double by Tom Ankers.
Boland had two of the Bears five hits in the loss.
The Bears close out the southern swing with a doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran at 9:00 on Thursday.
