Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Christina Antonakakis scored a team-high 30 points to lead visiting MIT to a 73-61 victory over Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears are now 14-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while MIT improves to 10-10 on the season and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.
Antonakakis was 12-18 from the field and 4-7 from behind the arc. Junior Jocelyn Luizzi added 17 points for the Engineers, as the two were the only ones in double figures for MIT.
Sophomore Kyra Hartman recorded her third double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Classmate Emma Puddington added a team-high 16 points along with nine rebounds and senior Zoe Riis-Fallica was the third player for Coast Guard in double figures with 15.
Luizzi scored 13 of her 17 points in the opening quarter as MIT jumped to a quick 22-12 lead.
The Bears outscored MIT in the second quarter, 16-14. Junior Annabella Farabaugh made a three-pointer at 8:10 in the second to cut the deficit, 24-17, sparking a 7-2 run to bring the Bears within five at 26-21. MIT answered with an 8-3 run of their own to take a 36-24 lead with 2:34 left in the half. Pudding made two jumpers in the final two minutes to make it 36-28 at halftime.
The Bears opened the half on a 9-2 run that was capped off by Riis-Fallica's three-pointer at 7:05 to bring the Bears within three at 40-37. The Engineers added four more points in the final two minutes of the quarter, extending their lead, 51-43.
Both teams exchanged three pointers to start the fourth quarter but MIT held the momentum going on a 10-3 run to hold a 64-51 advantage. Antonakakis had seven of her points in the fourth quarter, leading MIT to the 73-61 final.
MIT was 27 of 63 (42.9%) from the field and nine of 24 (37.5%) from three-point range. Coast Guard shot 25 of 69 (36.2%) from the field and eight of 27 (29.6%) from three-point range. The Engineer held a 40-36 advantage in rebounds.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:30 as they host Smith in the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader.
