Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.-- Senior Packy Witkowski had a game-high 30 points for Coast Guard men's basketball as the Bears fell to WPI 91-80 on the road in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. WPI improves to 17-4 on the season and 8-2 in conference play. Coast Guard drops to 7-13 overall and 2-8 in NEWMAC action.
Witkowski shot 10-16 from the field and 6-8 from behind the arc to lead the Bears. Sophomore Garrett Drummond added 15 points with six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Madison Maloney had a season-high 14 points and added a team-high eight rebounds. Justin Kane was the final player for the Bears in double figures with 10 points, also adding six rebounds.
Garrett Stephenson led WPI with 21 points and Kahleb Downing added 20 points for the Engineers. Colin McNamara added 12 points and Jake Needleman and Lou Doherty also scored in double figures with 11 each.
WPI led 17-15 with 12:30 on the clock in the first after a three by Witkowski, but the Engineers rattled off a 10-0 run over the next three minutes taking a 25-15 lead. WPI extended the lead to as many as 19 in the first before taking a 51-36 lead at the break.
Coast Guard whittled away at the lead in the second half cutting the deficit to seven, 85-78, on a Kane layup, but that was as close as they would get as WPI quickly pushed the lead back double digits.
The Bears were 26-55 (47.3%) from the field and 8-19 (42.1%) from three-point range, while WPI went 32-63 (50.8%) from the field and 13-22 (59.1%) from behind the arc. Coast Guard outrebounded WPI, 38-33.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, February 12 when they host MIT at 5:30 PM.
