Kane's Career-High 35 Not Enough in Double OT Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –Jake Ross had career-highs with a school-record 55 points and 21 rebounds as No. 23 Springfield outlasted upset minded Coast Guard, which overcame a 19-point first half deficit, 105-99 in thrilling double overtime New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Justin Kane led the Bears with a career-high 35 points, 28 of those in the second half and overtime periods. He was 14 for 24 from the floor including four of six from 3-point range while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Packy Witkowski added 27 points and seven rebounds while Garrett Drummond had 15 points for the Bears (7-12, 2-7). Tyler Perez would add 10 boards in the loss.

The only player in Division I, II, or III to have at least 50 points and 20 rebounds in a game this year, Ross broke the previous Springfield College men's basketball program record for points in a game, which was 50 set in 1970.  Additionally, his 55 points was the second most scored in a game this season throughout the country, regardless of division. 

The Bears, who never led in the game, rallied from a nine-point deficit with 1:23 left to force overtime on a layup by Kane with one second left. In the first overtime, the Bears trailed 97-93 with under a minute left before Kane tied the game 97-97 on a layup with nine seconds left and he then had a steal with two seconds left to send the game to a second overtime.

Trey Witter's layup with 3:38 left in double overtime gave SC the lead for good 99-97 and a layup by Heath Post with 2:55 left pushed the lead to 101-97.

Drummond had a layup with 2:45 left before Noah Cummings layup with 2:05 left kept the lead at four, 103-99 before a dunk by Post with 17 seconds left closed the scoring.

Springfield (17-3, 8-1) shot 40.2 percent in the win (35-87) and connected on 8 of 27 from 3-point range while the Bears were 39 of 87 (44.8 percent) and hit 11 of 24 from behind the arc.

The Pride led 22-9 with 11:13 left in the first half and the Pride led 33-14 with 6:26 left in the half taking a 42-33 lead at the break.

Coast Guard trailed the entire second half until the layup with one second left by Kane.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to WPI for a NEWMAC game at 2:00.
