Drummond Leads Bears Past Emerson Into NEWMAC Semifinals

BOSTON, Mass. – Garrett Drummond had 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Coast Guard overcame a 12-point second half deficit leading the fifth-seeded Bears to a 80-78 win over defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion and fourth-seeded Emerson in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC tournament.

Coast Guard playing in its first NEWMAC tournament game since 2011 ran its season long win streak to five improving to 12-13 on the season. The Bears will play at top-seeded Springfield on Friday at 5:00 in the semifinals. Emerson finishes 14-12.

It was the Bears second win over the Lions in five days after they clinched a spot in the tournament with a 102-99 win over Emerson at home on Saturday. Emerson beat the Bears in the NEWMAC opener 94-75 in Boston this season.

Drummond was 11 for 16 from the field including 8 of 10 in the second half and he hit all three of his trifectas in the win.

Noah Baldez had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Justin Kane also registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Tyler Perez added 12 points while Packy Witkowski grabbed 10 rebounds in the win for the Bears.

Nate Martin led Emerson with 19 points.

Max Davis scored the final 11 points of the first half in just 81 seconds to cap a 14-0 run as Emerson took a 43-33 lead into the half.

Coast Guard led 33-29 with 4:20 left in the half before the Lions scored the final 14 points to end the half including a half court buzzer beater by Davis.

Emerson led 55-44 with 15:33 left before the Bears used a 14-5 run capped on eight straight to regain the lead 58-57 on a layup by Drummond with 11:27 left.

Coast Guard took a 74-69 lead with four minutes left before the Lions pulled even on a 3-pointer by Martin with 3:02 left.

Baldez gave the Bears the lead for good on a pair of free throws with 2:48 left. Jarred Houston made one of two free throws with 2:33 left to make the score 76-75.

Witkowski grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back putting the Bears up 78-75 with 2:05 left. Houston would again make one of two and the score was 78-76 with 1:37 remaining.

Baldez would make two free throws with 11 seconds left for an 80-76 lead. Martin's layup with five seconds left cut the deficit to 80-78 and after a missed front end of a one-and-one, Davis' 3-pointer at the buzzer sending the elated Bears to the NEWMAC semifinals.

Coast Guard shot 39.1 percent (27-69) hit 11 of 28 from behind the arc (39.3 percent) and Emerson  shot 42.3 percent (30-71) from the floor and made 10 of 27 from 3-point range.

Coast Guard hit back-to-back 3-pointers by Kane and Drummond in the opening 63 seconds for a quick 6-0 lead. The Bears led 10-3 just three minutes into the game.

The Lions used a 10-2 spurt to take their first lead of the game 13-12 with 13:52 left in the first half.
