Bears Win Third Straight; Beat Wheaton 101-78

NEW LONDON, Conn. ---Reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week Packy Witkowski continued his torrid February stretch as he finished with a game-high 26 points leading Coast Guard to a 101-78 win over Wheaton in a NEWMAC game.

Witkowski has scored 25 or more points in all six games this month as Coast Guard is playing its best basketball of the season at the right time. He was 8 of 16 from the floor including 5 of 11 from 3-point range and moved into second place on the Bears' all-time 3-point list passing Grant Johnson ('08), who had 244 career treys. Witkowski now has 246 trifecta's in his career 20 behind all-time leader Al Sowers ('08).

The Bears, who ran their win streak to a season long three, improve to 10-13 overall and 5-8 in the NEWMAC while the Lyons drop to 6-17 overall and 1-12 in conference play with one game left in the regular season.

Coast Guard can clinch its first NEWMAC tournament berth since 2011 with a win over Emerson in the regular season finale at home on Saturday at 1:00 or with a WPI over MIT.

Jack Brunswick added a career-high 11 points off the bench, Tyler Perez also added 11 points while Jason Frazer finished with 10 points off the bench in the win. Justin Kane had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Bears while Garrett Drummond led the way with a game-high five assists.

Aaron Williams led Wheaton with 16 points off the bench while Alex DuBrow (15), Evan Cook (14) and Alex Carlisle had 13 points for the Lyons. Robby Lowey had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Coast Guard, which never trailed, jumped out to an 11-2 lead and pushed the lead to double figures using a 9-0 run to take a 34-23 on a trey by Perez with 9:03 left in the first half. Coast Guard led 53-39 at the break.

The Bears would use an 8-2 run to start the second half opening up a 61-41 lead with 17:35 left. Coast Guard had its largest lead of the game 85-54 on a Frazer 3-pointer with 9:21 left.

Coast Guard was 35 of 79 (44.3 percent) from the field and hit 15 of 40 from downtown (37.5 percent) while  Wheaton shot 42 percent (29-69) from the floor and hit 7 of 22 from beyond the arc
