Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Packy Witkowski had a game-high 25 points leading Coast Guard to a key 80-64 win over host Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Witkowski, who was 5 for 6 from behind the arc, has been red hot this month as the posted his fifth straight game with 25 or more points. He moved into fourth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list passing Mark Harris ('96), who had 1,402 points. Witkowski now has 1,405 career points.
Coast Guard improves to 9-13 overall and all alone in the fifth and final playoff spot with a 4-8 record in conference play with two games left while Clark drops to 8-15 overall and 3-9 in the NEWMAC. The Bears also sweep the season series from the Cougars.
The Bears are trying to qualify for the NEWMAC tournament for the first time since 2011 when they advanced to the semifinals. They lead MIT by one game with two left to play.
Noah Baldez added 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Tyler Perez added 11 points and eight rebounds in the win for Coast Guard.
Biko Gayman led Clark with 20 points.
Coast Guard, which led 39-38 at the half, scored the first nine points of the second half and led 48-38 following a trey by Witkowski with 17:30 left.
The Cougars answered with nine straight cutting the deficit to 48-47 with 15:23 left before the Bears came right back with and 11-2 spurt pushing the lead to 59-49 on a 3-pointer by Perez with 11:04 left.
Clark did not get closer than eight points the rest of the way and the Bears put the game away with six straight turning a 64-56 lead with 5:43 left into a 70-56 edge with 3:12 left.
The Bears shot 47.5 percent in the win (29 of 61) and made eight of 17 from behind the arc. Clark was 23 of 56 (41.1 percent) and hit 12 of 33 from downtown (36.4 percent). Coast Guard held a 42-27 rebounding edge.
Coast Guard got off to a quick start taking a 7-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. The Bears led 12-5 before the Cougars ran off seven straight tying the game 12-12 with 13:42 left in the first half.
The Bears led 24-19 when Clark used a 9-2 spurt to take the lead 28-26 on a 3-pointer by Gayman with 4:53 left in the half.
Coast Guard would answer with 10 straight capped on a trey by Witkowski taking a 36-28 lead with 3:19 remaining in the opening half.
Clark would score the final seven points of the half and the Bears led 39-38 at the break.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Wheaton at 7:00
